Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game

“If anyone ever asks you what panic is, now you can tell them: an emotional blank spot that leaves you feeling as if you've been sucking on a mouthful of pennies.”

Gerald’s Game is quite possibly one of the most disturbing of all of Stephen King’s books; not least of all because of the disturbing nature of some of the subject matter.

Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game is certainly not a book for the faint-hearted. As well as gore, suspense, and mental torment, we also have what amounts to attempted rape and a bit of child abuse in here too.

Gerald’s Game, then, is a book of many different types of horrors and, yes, it even has an apparition that goes bump in the night.

Gerald’s Game – The Novel

The plot of Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game sounds quite straight forward: Husband and wife take a break in a secluded cabin, husband asks wife to play kinky games in bed again, wife agrees, husband handcuffs wife to bed, wife changes mind, husband doesn’t want to stop, wife kicks husband in nuts, husband falls on floor dead. How Many times have we heard that story!

Of course, then we have the wife handcuffed to a bed in a secluded cabin and no way to escape, so we already have the perfect setting for a good horror yarn. But this is a Stephen King book, so there is a lot more to come and much if it will be unexpected, so we will try not to give too much away.

Suffice to say that, when you are trapped alone, tied with handcuffs to a bed, you are going to have plenty of time to do some thinking, listen to the voices in your head and, perhaps, do absolutely anything to get those handcuffs off.

We like to give you both sides of the coin here at Stephen King Store, so we will tell you this: Gerald’s Game has been heralded by some as one of the best written books that Stephen King has ever produced.  Others, however, have called the book tasteless and even exploitative.

What the book certainly is very intense and Stephen King uses what is an almost comic scenario to get deep inside the head of the main character, Jessie Burlingame, in what is one of the deepest character studies you will ever read.

Gerald’s Game may not be for everybody, we warn you about that, because it does explore horrors of many different kinds. It’s a book that will scare some people and anger others, but it’s a superb piece of writing, even if you don’t like some of the subject matter.

Gerald’s Game – The Movie

There is a film adaptation of Gerald’s Game in the pipeline and we’ll keep you updated with news on that, as and when comes along.

In 2014, it was reported that Mike Flannigan, director of Hush and Before I Wake, was set to direct a movie version of Gerald’s Game. There has been no news as to whether or not Stephen King will be involved with the project.

Last reports suggested that Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood had been cast in the film to play Jessie and Gerald Burlingame, and the film would be premiered on Netflix. Early work on the film is said to have begun in October 2016.
